Hurricane Ophelia

In case no one has noticed, yet another terrible natural disaster is headed towards our country. As I just discovered recently the hurricane is named Ophelia and is edging ever closer to the coasts of Virginia and the Carolinas. Even though this hurricane is a great deal less significant than Katrina, which recently rocked the gulf coast, it still will leave many people homeless and without anything in their lives. My true worry is if this new group of hurricane victims will get the same kind of attention, or relief, that the victims in New Orleans appear to be receiving. To begin with the media has touched upon Ophelia as only a minor footnote, partially due to the fact that it has not hit land yet and therefore has no devastation to report as of yet. But once the hurricane comes, will the media simply swap one natural disaster for another in order to fill up their news day?
     On the first hand, Ophelia would be a timelier tale than that of the long-gone Katrina. But naturally, it is not the easy in the media world to flip in such a manner; while the politics of ratings and public interest always overrules reporting of every story. Due to the fact that the public hooked onto New Orleans first, it is easier to continue the same footage instead of moving to an identical occurrence that the public is less familiar with. It is even possible that the public has been somewhat desensitized due to the over saturation of hurricane coverage.
     Yet one of my main concerns would be that so many resources are being diverted towards New Orleans, will there be any left for the Carolinas and Virginia? Put together American citizens, FEMA, the Red Cross, foreign aid, and other organization have only so much money and manpower, all of which has already been focused on New Orleans, making these resources weaker when it comes to new hurricane victims on the East Coast for at this point these people only seem to be afterthoughts.
     How far will the charity of American citizens go?
